“The difference between peak performance and poor performance is not intelligence or ability; most often it’s the state that your mind and body is in.”
I received this image on WhatsApp this morning and there was no explanation with this which made me think about the myriad number of emotions we have within us. These emotions, when used positively, can result in unimaginable successes, if only, one could have the capability to change from one emotion to the other. In NLP, these can also be referred to as states, emotional states of mind, and if one is able to change from one state to the other effectively, imagine the benefits one can have from such state changes.
Let me give you an example, and what if you can be a participate in this example, you would love to experience it firsthand wouldn’t you? So, as you read this, think of a moment the last time you felt let down by one of your colleagues at work, that experience when you felt humiliated because of an action from your colleague with no fault of yours. Did it make you feel frustrated and angry? For some it would have made them feel annoyed, for others it could be a feeling of being disrespected and a few others would feel withdrawn and dismissive. Now hold this thought for a moment and check out your emotion, check for your emotional state of how you feel within. Not a good feeling is it?
Now for the next step, can you utter the last 7 digits of your telephone /mobile number, backwards, yes backwards, go ahead try it for yourself, say it loud. Did you manage it successfully? Now this is called “break-state”. Used for getting into a neutral state of mind. Having done this so well so far, let’s get into the last part of the exercise, imagine yourself to be on a holiday, you may want to think about the last most enjoyable holiday you have had or imagine the ideal kind of holiday you look forward to have. Close your eyes if you would like to for a few secs to imagine the location of your holiday, see what you see, hear the sounds , feel the environment , enjoy that feeling of being on a holiday. Consider your mental frame of mind Now. You FEEL HAPPY, don’t you?” Probably YES!!
Do this once more , now that you know what to do, think of an actual memorable vacation you had and live that moment with with all of your visual , audio and emotional senses.
The next time you would want to get into a “Happy State”, go through the last part of the above exercise and notice the difference in your attitude, hear the liveliness in your voice, feel the uplifted cheerful spirit and then do the job at hand. Use this just before going for an interview, maybe before meeting with your boss, or just to Feel Happy for no reason and don’t be surprised if you suddenly become the most wanted amongst friends, become the life of parties , become that influential colleague in the office that people love to be with. These are just few of the benefits of NLP techniques I practice with my clients who coach with me. Some other areas where this can be useful are mentioned here. This was getting into a “Happy State”. My next post probably would be on another NLP technique to successfully change the states across the Circle of Emotions at your own will. Interesting, isn’t it ?
